NCIS on Waterloo road

Narrative: The trailer for Waterloo road has several narrative stands that a rich girl turns up and within a minute kisses a boy which has a girlfriend, The trailer shows a rich wealthy family putting a young teenager into a poor high school to show her the "the harsh reality" which was said by the dad. This is subversive because a wealthy family would put their children into a private school which they did not in this case because of the girl attitude.

Character:the head teacher was more stereotypical  by him having a clip board  and wearing a suit. The camera pands up from her feet to face slowly up builds up tension to the view then show her full body and stature which was proud and superior.

iconography:The props that was used in the trailer that made the teachers look presentable with a clip board and wearing suites otherwise the students did not look presentable that wore dirty ruff cloths girls wearing makeup to which also mean they don't care about the rules and don't want to succeed in life.

Setting:This trailer was set in a poor school in a playground which didn't have a lot of space because as you can see the children and teachers was a little cramped and this shows the school isnt well kept

Narrative Theory

Todorov said that all films/novels start off with an Equilibrium and then a disruption that is the Disequilibrium where something bad happens that may stop the hero or interrupted what they are doing and then ends with a New Equilibrium where the problem gets  sorted out and its all calm.

In my case the Hunger Games, I can apply this theory because, at the start there is an Equilibrium when Katniss lives in a society where the young people from various districts names go into a pot and if picked they are sent off to battle to the death where only one survives. The Disequilibrium is when Katniss' sister gets picked but then Katniss (the hero) bravely   volunteers to go in her place to make her safe and not have to battle. This means she has to go to a specific place to train in order to survive. The New Equilibrium will come when she is successful in her mission but this is not shown in the trailer because the film makers want the audience to keep watching.

Propp said that all films have key characters that can fit into certain categories. In my case study, I can apply this:

Hero- This is Katniss. I know she is the hero because her quest is to survive and win the Hunger Games.

Villain- This would be President Snow and the people running the Hunger Games because president snow is the boss of the Hunger Games and makes the teenagers battle and also the other people battling because them people are trying to kill her.

Helper- This could be Peter, Gail and the designer that trys to present her in the best way.
Mentor- this is Haymitch and Cinna because they both help presented her self good and strong and also because they train her ready to fight to be able to survive.
Donor / Mentor- This would be the  people who train her in order for her to survive.

Barthes said every film has action codes and enigma codes:

An Action code is shown when you see the teenagers running for the weponds  then quickly changes slides this is also an enigma code because the audience will be thinking will she get the weponds and survive another enigma code is when the lady is going to pick a name from a pot and at this time the audience will be wondering if it is the main characters (Katniss)  or her sisters (primrose)name.

representation of hunger games

The Hunger Games film is subversive in its representation of women by using a teenage girl as a heroine. This is unusual because it is normal big/muscular white man normally used as the main character  whereas this film focuses on a young, teenage girl who is brave, courageous and a skilled fighter rather than a love interest or a Princess. However, the film is presented as a little bit conventional by the main character  Jennifer Lawrence is presented as slim and pretty which is normal for a male audience to appreciate. in the film the teenage males were represented as threatened and intimidated of the main character whilst the  people was spectating them: this is conventional because  males are conventionally seen as more action driven. In this film normally men saves girls but in this film the main character  that is a girl saves the boys life.
The film represents family in a positive way because the main character katniss volunteers and goes to fight insted of her sister this shows that family are close and cares about each other.
conuetionally, heroes tend to be Caucasian. In terms of race, the three main characters are all white and survive yet the other races die early in the fight.
For ages, the film is unconventional as it shows young people battling it out whilst parents and people when normally teenagers shouldn't be involved in death and also parents normally try and get their son and daughters away from violence. The film is set in a futuristic America with districts.

They used a female as a main character and that subversive which males are normaly the main character. The title is in capital letters to emprises the meaning and showing the title is important because the title "hunger games " has connotations off struggle and poverty. The release date is at the button of the poster so the audience will know when they can watch it .The main character Jennifer Lawrence  is already well known and she has her own audience that will come and support the film to so they don't need stars to get an audience. The film tried to represent as girls as powerful more then men .
